MRUNDIKANO WA TAKATAKA JIJI LA DAR ES SALAAM KWA SASA UMEKUWA MBAYA ZAIDI

The vice-president, Dr Mohammed Gharib Bilal, has directed city fathers to introduce a sustainable plan that would ease and improve garbage collection in a bid to cope with the rapid growth of the city of Dar es Salaam.

Dr Bilal said in the city yesterday that the city council should also speed up project that would see garbage being turned into opportunity. This would entail production of gas that would in turn used to generate electricity.

“Since the city keeps growing there should be a sustainable plan which will be the best way to manage waste collection. This would include turning waste into opportunities such as production of fertilizer, gas or electricity”, said the vice-president.

Dr Bilal was, meanwhile, inspecting the state of cleanliness in the city. He also said that there should be cooperation between different health stakeholders in quest to keep the city clean. The city council should cooperate with the ministry of Health and Social welfare to keep the city clean.

Earlier, the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr Said Meck Sadiki, said the City Council could not collect the waste by at least 50 per cent due to shortage of equipment. He told the vice-president that the municipalities in the city do not have enough waste collection trucks.

“Waste collection has become a major challenge due to shortage of tools which are needed in order to cope with the growth of the city” he noted. A minister of State in the Vice-president’s office (Environment), Dr Terezya Huvisa, recently blamed the city fathers for poor management of garbage collection and causing environmental hazards.

The minister urged members of the public to cultivate the habit of cleanliness in the surroundings and that residents should collect sold waste in their surroundings.
